Food: Neighborhood Plan

Community garden bed

At the Neighborhood Level, residents should supplement their food supplies with neighborhood gardens and P-patches.

Disaster Hubs will coordinate resource sharing among residents, distributing extra food from people who have more than they need to those who don't have enough. Each neighborhood Disaster Hub needs a secure emergency food supply. This supply will sustain nonresidents who are trapped in your community away from their own homes during an emergency.

To launch your Food Plan at the Neighborhood Level, you need to implement the following steps:

Step 1. Launch your Disaster Hub program.

Step 2. Create an emergency food storage supply for each Disaster Hub. Calculate enough food for 5 percent of the population of each neighborhood x 3 meals x 30 days.

Step 3. Store the emergency food supply in a cool, dry place at each Disaster Hub.

Step 4. Encourage the start of community gardens and P-patches in each neighborhood.

Step 5. Designate a day every year on which you check the emergency food supply at the Disaster Hub for soon-to-expire food. Take the soon-to-expire food to your local food bank.
