Energy: Street Energy Assessment


  1. Where are all utility shutoffs located on your street? Create a map showing the locations.


  1. During an extensive power outage, will your street require outdoor lighting? 


  1. What square footage will need to be lit?


  1. Calculate how much a solar-powered outdoor lighting system would cost. Consider a motion-activated system.


  1. Do any neighbors require powered medical equipment? Calculate the daily wattage. Will a shared generator work to power these devices? 


  1. Calculate how much a suitable generator would cost.


  1. Determine a location for the generator.


  1. If your street is sunny, identify a location for a solar panel-powered charging station for phones and devices.


  1. Calculate how much such a system would cost.


  1. Does your street have community wells?


  1. Calculate how much a suitable generator would cost to power your well.


  1. Determine where to place the generator.


  1. What other systems do you have on your street that need to be powered? 


  1. Do you live in a very hot and /or humid region? How can you create more shade on your street?


  1. Do you live in a very rainy region? If so, what area of your street can you cover with a tarp to serve as an outdoor communal kitchen?


  1. If you live in a very cold region, what shared area can you use for a bonfire to serve for warmth and for outdoor cooking?
