Child Safety and Reunification Team: Introduction

The Child Safety & Reunification (CS&R) Team is dedicated to ensuring the well-being of the community’s children during and after disasters. The team's mission includes creating and executing comprehensive plans for the 24/7 care of unaccompanied minors.
CS&R focuses on two main objectives in pursuing its mission:
Education: Educating parents/guardians and schools and other child care facilities about emergencies and how to prepare and respond after a disaster.
Creating a Child Reunification Center: Identifying a facility for the Child Reunification Center, creating a Memorandum of Understanding with the building owners, building a team of volunteers to staff the Center, equipping the center with supplies, and training volunteers.
Pre-Disaster Responsibilities
CS&R meets with school administrators and the managers of after-school programs and day-care facilities to educate them about how to keep their children safe in the immediate 48 hours after a disaster (not needed in Canada, where this is legislated; but you should check to make sure schools are following the protocols).
Disaster Responsibilities
During an activation, CS&R volunteers coordinate the transfer of children who have not yet been picked up by parents or guardians from schools, after school programs, or day-care facilities to the Child Reunification Center. They ensure the Center is staffed with background-checked professionals and volunteers. They care for the children until the very last one is picked up by an approved adult.
