
Business Continuity Team: Scope of Practice
Mission
To ensure the economic resilience of the community post-disaster by equipping businesses with tested contingency plans to facilitate a rapid recovery.
Pre-Disaster Activities
Participating in community-sponsored training, drills, and exercises
Creating and disseminating preparedness information to the business community, especially insurance planning information
Maintaining a list of post-disaster recovery grants and how to apply for them quickly
Engaging with either the municipality or the county in identification of critical infrastructure buildings, which may be public or private entities
Activation Timeline
48–96 hours post-incident
Post-Disaster Activation
Team Lead with support from team members conducts a visual survey of disaster effects on local businesses determining which businesses are destroyed and which are open.
One week after the disaster, the Team meets with local businesspeople to assess their situation and identify a path for recovery. The Team Lead assigns team members to assist with key functions:
Preparing a status report on local businesses for local government
Assisting businesses with grant applications
Assisting businesses with post-disaster cleanup and damage documentation
Assisting businesses with insurance claims
Acting as intermediary between businesses and EOC/local government
Putting in requests for help from the local government
Gathering needed resources
Hours will vary based on the nature of the incident but will not exceed one 12-hour shift/24-hour period for a maximum of 14 consecutive days.
Supervision Responsibilities
Team Lead will supervise other team members as needed.

FEMA IS-100 (An Introduction to the Incident Command System)
FEMA IS-700 (An Introduction to the National Incident Management System)
Watch Three Pillars of Resilience, a 45-minute talk on the crucial connections between business continuity, neighborhood resilience, and personal preparedness, presented by Bainbridge Prepares Founder and Board Chair Scott James to an audience of West Coast and Hawaiian chapters of Entrepreneurs Organization (EO).
