Leadership: Street Plan
At the Street Level, leadership evolves as part of the Ready Your Street (RYS) Program. As neighbors get to know each other and make plans for what to do in the event of a disaster, levels of leadership form.
A leader at the Street Level should be engaged in community issues. They know their neighbors and are responsible for gathering people together to prepare and spread information. They should be informed about the larger community emergency plan and have access to basic equipment including two-way radios, megaphones, basic first aid supplies, and RYS handouts.
Step 1. Select a Street Captain and Co-Captain. Also choose two backup leaders in the event that the main leaders are unavailable during a disaster.
Step 2. Facilitate an RYS kick-off meeting for participating households. Provide participating households with the RYS flipbook.
Step 3. Collect key information from all residents of the Street including how many people and animals live in each residence, whether any resident has special needs, where gas shutoffs are located, and whether the residents have any special emergency-related skills or equipment (i.e., first aid training, medical certification, chainsaw). Record this information on the RYS Emergency Contact Sheet and the Skills & Supplies Inventory.
Step 4. Create a map of the Street, showing where each household and gas, water, and electricity shutoffs are located and where the Street Meeting Place is.
Step 5. Assign a Utility Coordinator, a Triage Coordinator, a Communication Coordinator, and a Search and Rescue Coordinator.
Step 6. Provide ongoing education to households of the Street.
Step 7. Participate as a Street in trainings, drills, and exercises.
Step 8. Participate in outreach/information booths for neighborhood and community events.
Step 9. Participate in Community Ready Your Street leadership meetings.
