Safety: Street Plan

Step 1. Get your street ready by participating in the Ready Your Street (RYS) program.

Step 2. Get Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certified if possible.

Step 3. As part of RYS, make a map of your street including the locations of residences and utility shutoffs.

Step 4. As part of RYS, identify a safe post-disaster meeting place on your street.

Step 5. Review post-disaster safety actions:

  • Gather at meeting place

  • Check on missing people or people with posted HELP signs.

  • Assess damage to your street. What buildings seem unsafe? Are there wires down? Are there any fires that need to be extinguished using Ready Your Street best practices for fire extinguishers? (Remember: The fire department is not coming any time soon in a disaster)

  • Shut off utilities if necessary.

  • Report to the nearest Disaster Hub on damage and injuries on your street.
